Factors That Influence Sticker & Label Printing Prices | Redblock

Sticker and label printing often looks simple on the surface – until you receive a quote and start wondering why prices can differ so much. The truth is, several behind-the-scenes factors influence the final cost, and understanding them can help you make smarter, more cost-effective decisions.

At Redblock, we believe clients should know why they’re paying what they’re paying. Here’s a clear, easy-to-understand breakdown of the main factors that affect sticker and label pricing.

1. Printing Method Makes a Big Difference

One of the biggest pricing factors is how the stickers are printed.

Digital Sticker Printing

Digital printing is ideal for small to medium quantities. It requires minimal setup, no printing plates, and offers fast turnaround times. Because setup costs are low, digital printing is often the most affordable option for short runs or designs that change regularly.

For example, a standard business-card-size sticker (90 × 50 mm) printed digitally:

  • Setup cost: around R250
  • Quantity: 500 stickers
  • Cost per sticker: approximately R4

This makes digital printing a popular choice for promotions, product testing, or smaller batches.

Plate-Based Printing (Flexographic or Lithographic)

For larger quantities, plate-based printing methods such as flexographic (flexo) or lithographic (litho) printing are commonly used. These processes require printing plates and die-cut tools to be manufactured before production can start.

Because of this setup, the initial cost is much higher.

Using the same 90 × 50 mm sticker example:

  • One-off plate and die setup: up to ± R3 000
  • Quantity: 500 stickers
  • Cost per sticker: ± R10 or more

At higher volumes, these methods become far more cost-effective – but for smaller quantities, the setup cost pushes prices up quickly.

2. Sticker Shape and Die-Cutting Costs

Sticker shape plays a surprisingly big role in pricing.

At Redblock, we already have a large collection of existing die-cut templates in common square and rectangular sizes. When clients request a size that’s very close to one of these templates, we sometimes ask permission to adjust the size slightly.

✔ The visual difference is usually unnoticeable
✔ The cost saving can be significant

This small adjustment can prevent the need for new plates or dies, helping you avoid unnecessary setup costs.

Custom Shapes Cost More

If you want a sticker cut to a completely custom shape — such as:

  • The outline of an animal
  • A product silhouette
  • An irregular or organic shape

A new custom die-cut template is required.

Custom die-cut templates alone can cost up to R8 000, depending on size and complexity. While this is a once-off cost, it has a major impact on pricing, especially for smaller quantities.

For many projects, a standard shape delivers the same branding impact at a fraction of the cost.

3. Rolls vs. Sheets

Another factor that affects price is how your stickers are supplied.

  • On rolls (often 1 000 stickers per roll):
Ideal for high-volume use or automated application.
  • On sheets:
Easier for hand application and smaller batches.

Each option involves different cutting, handling, and production processes, which is why pricing can differ.

4. Print Quality and Finish

Both digital and plate-based printing produce professional-quality results, but they each shine in different situations:

  • Digital printing offers vibrant colours and sharp detail, making it perfect for complex designs and short runs.
  • Flexo and litho printing deliver excellent consistency for large volumes and long production runs.

The “best” option depends on quantity, design complexity, and budget – not just quality alone.

5. Artwork Readiness Can Save You Money

One of the easiest ways to reduce sticker costs is by supplying print-ready artwork.

If your artwork:

  • Is the correct final size
  • Is set up in CMYK colour mode
  • Uses high-resolution files (PDF, AI, EPS, or high-quality JPG/PNG)
  • Includes proper bleed and safety margins

You can typically save R500 to R700 in setup and artwork preparation fees.

Following the artwork guidelines on our sticker printing page ensures smoother production, faster turnaround, and lower costs.

Final Thoughts

Sticker and label printing prices depends on far more than just size and quantity. The biggest cost influencers include:

  • Printing method
  • Setup and plate costs
  • Sticker shape and die-cutting
  • Quantity ordered
  • Artwork readiness
  • Supply format (rolls or sheets)

At Redblock, we don’t just print stickers – we help clients choose the most cost-effective solution without compromising on quality. Sometimes that means adjusting a size slightly, choosing a standard shape, or recommending a different printing method altogether.

If you’re unsure which option is best for your project, we’re always happy to advise.
