T-Shirt Printing Made Easy

We use two types of printing methods at Redblock. The first option is Screen printing and the second is VideoFlex printing. We also offer T-shirts at affordable prices. Below you will find more info regarding both T-shirt Printing methods as well as some info on shirts.

We don’t only print onto T-shirts, we also print onto golf shirts and a variety of other shirts and materials. You can either request our price list for our standard promo shirts or follow the links below to our more corporate shirts. THE QUALITY OF OUR T-SHIRTS

The first step of T-Shirt printing is choosing the shirts that you want printed. Most people make the mistake by compare the quality of T-shirts by the weight of the material. The thickness of T-shirts generally gets measured according to the grams per square meter of the material. This would be between 120 grams and 200 grams.

This is only an estimate, but a 145 gram T-shirt is not necessarily a better quality shirt than a 170 gram T-shirt. T-shirts that gets categorized as a 145 gram per square meter pre-shrunk and produced from 100% cotton material with interlock weaving appears neater and will keep its shape better as for example a 180 gram “carded cotton” T-shirt.

Carded cotton would be generally made of lower grade material and mass produced. The colour process of these lower quality shirts also differs and lower quality shirts tend to fade. However these lower quality shirts still remain very popular because of price sensitive clients and a large competitive market.

As a rule we only supply 100% cotton T-shirts unless otherwise requested.

T-SHIRTS COULD BE SUPPLIED BY US OR BY THE CUSTOMER. PLEASE NOTE THAT DARK COLOURED SHIRTS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE TO PRINT ON THAN LIGHTER AND WHITE SHIRTS.

T-SHIRT PRINTING METHOD: SCREEN PRINTING

The most common and the oldest process in which T-shirts printing would be done. Positives must be prepared, silk screens must be manufactured and these silk screens then get set up. This is a lengthy and time consuming process and therefore more expensive on lower quantities, but cheaper on high volume printing. The minimum amount of shirts printed with this process is 20 if the print consists of 1 or 2 different colours in the design, 50 shirts if the design consists of 3 or more colours.

A big advantage of silk screen T-shirt printing is that the ink penetrates in to the material and thereafter goes through a heat process. This printing method lasts even longer than what the shirt itself will last.

When requesting a quotation on screen printing we will require the following information from you to quote accurately.

    • Whether the artwork will be provided in spot or fading colours.
    • The amount of items that will be printed.
    • The size of the design.
    • Whether the artwork will be supplied in a print ready (editable vector) format to us.
    • The amount of colours that the design consists of that will be printed.

If artwork and layout is not provided to us in a vector (editable) format, our graphic design team can redesign the artwork at R450 per hour. The finished design would then be sent back to you. This could be used in the future for all you screen, litho or digital printing needs, even at different printing companies.

T-SHIRT PRINTING METHOD: VIDEOFLEX

The heat transfer Process starts when you digitally print in full colour on a plastic-like vinyl material that gets cut out in any shape and placed on a surface where it can be transferred with a heat press. With the heat transfer process, the transfer sheet would be pressed with 180°C – 200°C. This would be at a pressure of 1.6 bar against the surface where the transfer would be done.

Videoflex offers two main options. Either to cut-out your work on pigmented video flex (this option would not fade in colour and there are many colours to choose from) or to have the artwork printed onto either white (slightly off white) or clear video flex (recommended when printing onto white shirts). When it comes to cutting out the Videoflex, either pigmented or printable, we have limitations. We would not be able to cut too fine a detailed design. The more detail there is the longer it takes to weed and the more it will ultimately cost. Therefore we do prefer to see the artwork and clarify the requirements before quoting.

Advantages of Using the Heat transfer or Videoflex process:

  • This has a faster turnaround time, compared to other printing methods
  • Images prints more clearly than other printing methods
  • Any artwork can be used(printable option only), where with the screen printing method, you are limited to vector format only
  • On low quantities, Videoflex would be more cost effective than silkscreen printing especially when many colours are involved.

Disadvantages of Using the Heat transfer or Videoflex process

  • Not all types of material can be used to Videoflex,
  • Some people dislike the plastic-like surface of the Videoflex.
  • It is advised that you shouldn’t iron, tumble dry, wash in a washing machine or dry clean heat transferred products. The best way to wash them are to wash them by hand in cold water. The colour also fades after a couple of washes (only with the printable option).
  • Artwork with fine outline detail and sharp edges would not be able to be cut-out. The artwork however could be put in a white block (or other colour), and pressed as a solid artwork.
